In March 2011, the church congregation responded in a big way to help the new homeless problem in Central Florida exposed by the broadcast of a CBS 60 Minutes segment. The program showed the detrimental impact of the economy on local families, especially the children affected by the downturn. First Baptist Orlando pledged more than $5 million during worship services on March 12-13 to make an impact on these families.
First Baptist Orlando has decided to partner with local nonprofit organizations to address a range of issues, from homeless prevention to food for impoverished elementary-school kids to transitional housing. The church has already come alongside appropriate community partners and provided resources, volunteers, prayer and support to help these partners more effectively meet this great need in our community. First Baptist Orlando has awarded nearly $4 million in grants to 11 Orlando-based nonprofits and directed an additional $400,000 under the Love Orlando banner.
The goal of Love Orlando is to help the “new homeless” families-in-transition move to long-term self-sustainability.
